Week 3 : Day 4 : Activities 1, 2 + Bonus Activity

Day 4: Perms and Lycra (The 1980’s)
Activity 1: Hairy Maclary
One of the most famous children’s stories to
ever come out of New Zealand, Hairy Maclary
from Donaldson’s Dairy, was written by a kiwi
woman named Lynley Dodd. The book was
originally published in 1983. It is now sold in
dozens of countries around the world. It
On your blog, use the following sentence starter
from the original book to finish the story.
“Out of the gate and off for a walk went Hairy Maclary
from Donaldson’s Dairy…”

To earn full points, your story should have, at least,
8-10 sentences.
My Hairy Maclary Story:
Out of the gate and off for a walk went Hairy Maclary
from Donaldson’s Dairy. He walked past other dogs,
funky cats, fury squirrels and prickly hedgehogs. A
dog called Tod, a cat called Mod and a squirrel called
Odd. But while he continued his walk Odd came along
with a tail that was very very long. Mod had a tail that
dragged along behind him across the hard cement
ground, a tail that almost had him taken to the pound.
Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy didn’t really mind
if a long tailed cat was following him but, as soon as
Hairy looked back there was nowhere for the Cat to
be seen. So Hairy Maclary continued his walk until he
heard the loud voice of someone talk. The voice said
“Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy where are you,
you need to come home”, and as soon as Hairy heard
that he ran straight to Donaldson’s Dairy where his owner
stood there alone. “Hairy Maclary there you are, I thought
you had wandered such afar” said his owner. And that
was the walk that Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy
wandered off on.

Activity 2: The Big ‘OE’
In the 1980s it became increasingly common for students
to graduate from high school and take a year off to travel
and experience the world. This year was often referred to
as the ‘Big OE’ or ‘Big Overseas Experience.’ A number of
kiwis headed to places like Australia and England to live
and work before returning to New Zealand to finish their
studies.

Imagine that you are a student in the 1980s and you’re
about to graduate from high school. Where would you
like to go on your big OE?
On your blog tell us which country you would visit and
give us three (3) reasons for your choice. Find some
pictures on the internet of things that you would like to
see and do in this country.

I’d love to go to Switzerland and spend lots of time in
the mountains, learning how to ski!

The Country that I would Visit:
I would visit the State New York City in America:
> I have never been to America and I would like to visit
that State first.
> I would like to visit all the amazing places like Times
Square and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
> I would also like to travel on a Ferry to the Liberty
Island which the Statue of Liberty stands.

Bonus Activity: The 4 O’Clock News
jacinda.jpg
In 1982, Te Karere, a Māori-language news show
premiered on television. It has continued to stream
live on TV to this day. If you would like to watch it,
turn on TV One at 3:55 p.m. each weekday and
you will see it. The show is often hosted by a man
named Scotty Morrison.

Imagine that you were Scotty Morrison and you were
able to interview anyone you wanted. I would choose
to interview our new prime minister, Jacinda Ardern.
I’d love to know what it is like to be the Prime Minister.
What about you? Who would you choose to interview
and why? What would you like to find out?

Who Would I Interview?
I would like to interview Malakai Fekitoa because he is
a Formal All Black that played for the best Rugby Team
in the World. He is also a Tongan man that was brought
up in the Village Ha’apai. I would really like to know how
he succeeded in leaving his home village to come to New
Zealand and live a whole new life.

  1. Hello Mikaela. Well done on getting through all these activities. Your descriptive words and rhyming in your Hairy Maclary story are very clever. Keep hold of your travel dreams - I am sure you will get to visit those places one day in future.
    Well done. Jenny

  3. Hey Mikaela, thank you for finishing the Hairy Maclary story. I love the way you have included rhyme and descriptive language in your story. It's cool how your story has a beginning, middle and an end too. It must have taken you a long time to plan and write. Do you often write stories? Have you read any other Hairy Maclary stories? He is always going off on adventures and meeting up with his friends.

Thank you for completing activity 2. I've always wanted to go to New York City too. It's often in movies and appears to be a really busy and happening place. I like the way you have included photos and descriptions. How long have you wanted to visit New York for? What made you attracted to the city?
Are there any other places in America that you would like to visit?

Thank you for completing activity three and sharing who you would most want to interview, Malakai Fekitoa. It's great when sports players have humble beginnings and come from small towns or villages. I would be interested to know when he moved to New Zealand and how he got into playing rugby.

    Thanks, Billy.
