Week 4 : Day 1 : Activities 1, 2 + Bonus Activity

Week Four:
Contemporary Kiwis
Welcome to Week Four, and the final five days of
our journey! Over the past three weeks we have
travelled across time and learned about what life was
like in New Zealand in the 19th and 20th centuries.
We have now reached the 21st Century and are
ready to learn about modern life in New Zealand.
Cool Kiwi Fact #5:
Sign language became the third official language of
New Zealand
(alongside Te Reo Māori and English) in 2006.

Day 1: Turn of the Century (2000-2010)
Activity 1: Celebrating a Win
In 2000, the country of New Zealand celebrated when
Russell Coutts and his sailing team won their second
straight America’s Cup. This was the first time that a
team from New Zealand had won back-to-back
championships! Many people celebrated the victory
with their friends and family.

On your blog, tell us what you and your family do to
celebrate special events, such as birthdays. Do you
have a special meal or go to a specific place? In our
house, we usually make a pizza and bake a special
cake. What about you?

What Does My Family Do To Celebrate:
When there is a upcoming special event my family
usually invites all our close friends and relatives so
that we can all be together to celebrate as a big family.
We also make special meals and drinks such as;
Tunu Puaka(Pig), Lu Sipi(Taro leaves & lamb),
Otai(Fruit Drink) and much more. It also depends on
what we are celebrating, for example a 21st Birthday
which we will have 21st key made with a photo of the
Birthday person and insert it into the key.

Activity 2: Lord of the Rings
Arguably one of the most famous movie trilogies of
all time, The Lord of the Rings, was filmed in New
Zealand. All three movies were directed by a New
Zealander named Peter Jackson.
The first movie was released in 2001, the second in
2002 and the third in 2003. The movies cost an
estimated $300 million to produce!

Imagine that instead of spending the money on the
movies, Peter Jackson decided to give all of this
money to you. Lucky you!
On your blog, tell us what you would do with $300
million dollars. How would you spend it? It is a lot of
money so please think carefully about it and spend it
wisely.

What Would I Do:
At times I can be a person that thinks about everything
I want first before thinking of others but I do know that
I would split it by giving some money to various charities
around the world, creating a shelter for those who cannot
provide things for themselves. I would also share some to
Schools and families who are suffering with payments,
school trips and more. I would also give partials of it to
the friends and family of mine that are close to me so
that it can help them with their small or big families.
Lastly I would split the rest of it into different accounts
such as: Savings, Spending and School meaning the
Savings and School account will proclaim more money
than what will be in my Spending account.

Bonus Activity: The Rise of the ‘Selfie’
20171103_081651.jpg

Although most of you are quite familiar with the idea of
taking a ‘selfie’ (picture of ourselves), this was not always
the case. In fact, it wasn’t until the early 2000s that
people started talking about the idea of a selfie, taking
selfies and posting them online.

In honour of the rise in popularity of the ‘selfie,’ take a selfie
and post it on your blog. Try to show us at least one of
your hobbies or one your favourite things (maybe a special
toy or book). For example, here is a selfie of Hazel drinking
a big mug of tea, and Rachel with her son, Aronui, attending
a Paw Patrol show!

  1. Hi Mikaela,
I like the photo of you with your cousins.

I like your idea with giving and making schools with the money you have and offering children a chance to go to school and not just hanging out at home doing nothing.

    Great work

  3. Hey Mikaela,

I really liked your idea of sharing the money with your close friends and families (Me) and charities all around the world.

Wow! Your family celebration sounds so fun. I also liked the foods that are there, they sound delicious!

    Keep up the great work!

  4. Hi there Mikaela, thank you for doing such a great job with your first activity. It's awesome to read how you celebrate special occasions, and I like how you've shared an example of what happens at a 21st birthday party. It's great that you've included a photo of the key too.

It's really helpful how you've also offered the translations for each of the kinds of food you make and serve. Tunu Puaka sounds delicious, I love pig. How is it cooked?

I am so impressed with how selfless you are! Your breakdown of spending the $300 million illustrates your generosity. You have even been sensible with the money you've decided to save for yourself.

Surely, you have to have at least one silly/extravagant purchase. For me, I would buy a really nice car or boat.

What would you buy for yourself?

    Thanks, Billy

  5. Kia Ora Mikaela,

I'm here to comment on your Bonus Activity: The Rise of the Selfie.
Ka pai for incorporating your cousins in to this activity, I think that that is really sweet of you. I really love the background of the picture, how the clouds are moving in a downward 'V' shape toward the Auckland SkyTower.
What sort of activities were you and your cousins doing at Mission Bay? Was it a warm day?

    Looking forward to your response!

    Cheers,

    Jordan.
