Week 3 : Day 3 : Activities 1, 2 + Bonus Activity

Day 3: Groovy Man (The 1970’s)
Activity 1: Ready to Roll
In the 1970s one of the most common television
programmes was called ‘Ready to Roll.’ It was
broadcast on Saturday afternoons and hosted by
a man named Roger Gascoigne. During the show,
Roger would introduce music videos and then play
them for the TV audience. He also invited famous
people to come onto the show and perform songs
that were currently popular.

Watch the following three clips that were shown on
the Ready to Roll programme:

When you have finished, rank the clips in order from
your most favourite (#1) to your least favourite (#3).
Post your rankings on your blog.

Activity 2: Bell Bottom Pants

Fashion in the 1970s was quite unique. Take a look
at the pictures of a ‘typical’ 1970s outfit and tell us,
on your blog, two things that you like about 1970s
fashion and two things that you don’t like about the
fashion of the day. I am not a huge fan of the
patterned pants. What about you?

My Likes and Dislikes:

> One thing that I like about the 1970’s outfit is the
pants that they wore because it looks very
comfortable and loose.
> I also like the colours that the pants come in.

> One thing that I dislike is the patterned pants.
> I also dislike the shoes that they wore because they
are very open.

Bonus Activity: A Bilingual Schooling System
For much of the past century, schools in New Zealand
taught students in only one language – English. In 1972,
Ngā Tamatoa member, Mrs. Hana Jackson, submitted a
petition to Parliament to ask the government to include
the teaching of Te Reo Māori (the Māori language) and
Māori culture in New Zealand schools. We still use
petitions to this day when we want an organisation
(e.g. a school) to make a change.

Think about your school. What is one thing that you
would like change. Would you like to learn about
different things? Maybe you think school should
only be open 3 days a week?

On your blog, write a letter to your principal to try and
convince him/her to make the change. Ensure that
your letter is polite and respectful.

Letter to Principal Coakley:
Hey Mr Coakley,
I would like to state a few things that have been on
my mind. I just wanted to tell you how I feel about
what we learn, our time at school and more. I think
that we aren’t doing much physical education because
besides all the Kiwi Sport most of the students decide
to just walk around or sit down and talk. Yes I know
that it isn’t our choice for them to do something physical
but I think that we should have more equipment led
with rules. For example we should have a leader that
takes control of the physical equipment/sport equipment
and keeps track of who may be using it, how long they
are using it and when they return it.
I also think that we should be learning more history in
classes from 3 to 7. We should learn the history about
inspiring people that lived in our world and also who are
living in this world. It is also important to our older
students that we can at least be able to visit the places
in our country that mean a lot to us. If we can do this
then it would be truly great.

Thank you, Mikaela

  1. Hey there Mikaela, great job with this letter you have written to your principal. I love how you've articulated yourself here. You are very clear and straight to the point.

I like how you speak about the need to motivate students to engage with physical activity. I think you're on the right track talking about more sports equipment. It could be a good idea to survey the students and see what equipment they would like more of. You could even have a team of highly motivated student leaders in the school that could organise and referee games and competitions within the school. This might help to motivate students.

It's great that you want to learn more about history. When requesting something like this, always say why it is a good idea. "I think we should learn more about inspiring people because..." I really like the sentence you wrote about it being important to your older students to visit places of personal importance.

You should definitely send this to your principal!

    Thanks, Billy

  2. Kia Ora again Mikaela,

Well done for completing another chunk of activities, you're doing really well!

    Activity 1: Ready to Roll.
Thanks very much for completing this activity and for ranking these video clips from the popular 1970s television programme, Ready to Roll.
I have to admit that I'm seeing a similar pattern here with the order in which students rank these video clips.
Can you tell me though, why you've given them the ranking that you have?

    Activity 2: Bell Bottom Pants.
Kia Ora and thank you for describing to us what you like and dislike about the fashion of the 1970s. I appreciate that you like the flared pants, not a lot of students do. I like your reasoning for them being comfortable and loose.
What kind of clothes do you like to wear? I love hats!

    Keep up the great work!

    Cheers,

    Jordan.
