Day 2: Learning the basics

21/12/2016.
Day 2
Now that you have chosen your country, it is time to decide where, within your country, you would like to visit. Many tourists will choose to visit the capital city of a country. It is often quite large and full of interesting things to see and do.
Activity 1
Before you go overseas it will be important that you learn a bit about the capital city of your country. Hop online and find out about the capital city of your country. Use this information to complete the five sentences below:
Answers:
  1. The name of the capital city is Ottawa.
  2. The population of the capital city (Ottawa) is 883,391.
  3. In January, the weather in the capital city (Ottawa) is usually about mostly very cold but sometimes sunny when the weather is cold the average temperature is from -6 C to -15 C.
  4. The capital city (Ottawa) is located in the northern (northern, southern, middle) part of the country.
  5. The languages most commonly spoken in the capital city (Ottawa) are English and French.

Activity 2
One of the most popular activities in Madrid, the capital city of Spain, is called ‘Bullfighting.’ It has been a part of Spanish culture for centuries. In bullfighting people called ‘toreros and ‘matadors’ fight with a live bull. The toreros do most of the fighting and, ultimately, capture the bull and tie it up. Once it has been caught, the matador joins the fight and kills the bull. Although most toreros and matadors are men, there are some women who also compete in the sport.
Not everyone supports bullfighting in Spain. In fact, about 30% of the population want it to be banned (stopped) completely. What do you think? On your blog tell us whether or not you think that bullfighting should be banned in Spain. Please provide, at least, two reasons to support your decision.

I think that the sport bullfighting should not be banned because it has been a part of the Spanish culture for centuries. This sport should also not be stopped because only 30% of the population want it to be banned and the other part of the population is actually a bigger percentage of keeping the bullfighting sport alive.

Bonus activity
Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand. Have you been to Wellington? If so, please tell us about two things that you did when you were in Wellington.

Answers:
I have been to Wellington, the capital of New Zealand and one of the things that I did when I was in Wellington was that I went to explore the museum with my aunty and cousins. Another thing that I had done while I was in Wellington was that I had gone to the Weta cave where I could see some of the Hobbit characters just like Smeagol.

  2. Kia ora Mikaela,

Wow it looks like you have been super busy over the holidays, well done! You have made so much progress on your learning journey, and I have lots of your awesome blogs to catch up on which I'm really excited about.

It looks like your visit to Canada will be a very cold one! Make sure you pack LOTS of warm jumpers, thermals and a beanie if you're going to visit. Did you know that in some parts of Canada it gets down to -30 degrees? Not even our freezers go that cold!

Thank you for sharing your opinion about bullfighting. Your discussion really made me think about whether or not we should ban bullfighting. I think it is incredibly important to be as respectful as we can of other cultures and their traditions - especially if we are guests in their country. However, as well as big very risky for the matadors, the bulls are mistreated terribly leading up to the fight in order to give the matador an unfair advantage in the bullfighting ring! Once in there, many bulls are badly injured, and unfortunately most of them die. I agree that it is important to listen to what the majority of people may want, but it's also important to think about animal welfare too... Food for thought!

I'm super jealous of your visit to the Weta Workshop. I've been to Wellington before too, but never there! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it :-)

Well done on your blogging Mikaela, it's going to be fun to read what you have written.

    Dan.
