Week 4 : Day 4 : Activities 1, 2 + Bonus Activity

Day 4: Contemporary Entertainment

Activity 1: Moana
moana.jpg
In late 2016, the movie Moana was released by Disney.
It’s a beautiful story about a young Polynesian girl from
the fictional island of Motunui, who goes on a big
adventure.

Watch the trailer for Moana and then write a summary
of the movie on your blog. If you’ve seen the movie,
you can include your favourite part! Tell us as much
as you can about the movie. What is it about? Who
are the main characters in the movie? What do they
do in the movie? Where do they go?

Moana:
The movie Moana is about a Polynesian girl who lives
in the land of Motunui. She takes on the tradition of
becoming the living chief of her tribe as her father the
recent chief passes down to her. A few of the main
characters in the movie are: (Moana), Maui, Sina
(Moana’s Mother), Chief Tui (Moana’s Father), Gramma
Tala, Hei Hei, Tamatoa (Crab) and Pua the pig. All
these characters participate in the movie by searching
for more about the land - Moana, Helping take back
the Heart of Te Fiti - Maui, Supporting their family -
Sina, Protecting the new Chief of Motunui - Maui and
also Guiding and Showing the way - Gramma Tala.
Moana grew up as a very curious person who explored
the lands whenever she could but didn’t get very far
despite her Father trying to keep her safe from the
dangerous Oceans. Soon she realised what she had
to do and decided to sail the Seas searching for Maui
the Shapeshifting Demigod so that he may take back
the Heart of Te Fiti.

Activity 2: Country Calendar
Did you know that the longest running television show
in New Zealand history is a programme called ‘Country
Calendar’? It started on 6 March 1966 and has been
running ever since. The programme includes stories
of everyday New Zealanders, many of whom are farmers.
Watch this short clip from Country Calendar. What do
you think would be the most interesting and/or
challenging things about being a farmer? Would you
like to be a farmer when you are older. Why/why not?
Give us, at least, two reasons to support your answer.

Farming:
I think that the most interesting things about being a
farmer would be identifying the new things that happen
everyday with the animals because you never know
what will happen next.

I also think that the most challenging things about being
a farmer would be:
> Having to wake up early each day and getting ready
to do all sorts of things.
> Cleaning the animals while trying to keep them still.
> Preparing the food/food scraps for them.
> Making sure that all the animals are where they are
supposed to be either if it’s in their pen/stable/field.

Would I like to be a farmer in the future?
Honestly I would definitely choose to be a farmer because
it takes a lot of effort, commitment, strength and speed when
you have the kind of job like that because you will always be
busy without any hesitation.
I am the type of person that likes to stay busy meaning I like
being able to do something every time instead of just sitting
around or anything like that.

Bonus Activity: Singing a Different Tune
A number of New Zealand (NZ) singers and songwriters have
recently burst onto the music scene, becoming popular both
in NZ and overseas. One of these artists, Lorde, is gaining
a lot of recognition for her unique style and songwriting ability.
People all over the world seem to really like the lyrics (words)
that she writes in her songs.

Think of your favourite song. Share the name of the song,
the name of the person who wrote the song and the lyrics
from the song on your blog. You must type the lyrics not cut
and paste them in order to earn full points for the activity.

Favourite Song:
Artist: Michael Jackson
Songwriter: Michael Jackson
Lyrics:
“ Tell me what has become of my life, I have a wife and two
children who love me - I am the victim of police brutality, now -
I’m tired of being the victim of hate - You’re rapping me of my
pride oh, for God’s sake -
I look to heaven to fulfil its prophecy - Set me free!

  1. Kia ora Mikaela,

My name is Emiely (pronounced “Emily”) and I work alongside Billy at the Summer Learning Journey!

Activity 1: You have done an exceptional job writing a description of the movie. I especially like the way you shared the different roles the characters played in the film. What a great summary! I remember going to watch Moana in the cinema and I really enjoyed it. The part where Moana returns the heart to Te Fiti is my favourite scene so I'm glad you mentioned it. Do you rmemeber why it was so important for Moana to return the heart to Te Fiti?

Activity 2: It is great to see you have put a lot of thought and effort into these activities. You should be so proud of yourself! I like the way you have used bullet points to list the challenging things about being a farmer. I also wouldn't mind being a farmer. I think it would be quite cute working with farm animals!

Activity 3: Michael Jackson is great isn't he? I don't think I am too familiar with this song though. What is this song called? I'd love to be able to listen to it! If you could link me to song that would be awesome. I'd really appreciate it and enjoy listening to it! :)

It's awesome to see how actively you have been blogging this summer. I know the Summer Learning Journey team have enjoyed reading and commenting on your blog. Just a reminder that you can earn bonus points by commenting on other children's Summer Learning Journey blog posts. I'm sure they would appreciate your thoughtful and helpful comments.

    Noho ora mai,

    Emiely :)
